Maiden Indian Volleyball League to start on May 29

Volleyball will be the latest sport to jump on the league bandwagon similar to cricket and hockey, as six teams with spikers of national and international repute will be seen in action in the first ever Indian Volleyball League (IVL) beginning here on May 29. The other legs of the league will later be held in Chennai, Yanam and Hyderabad.
 
Volleyball Federation of India (VFI) Secretary General K Murugan told newspersons here that about 100 players playing for their respective teams could be seen in action in the first endeavour towards making volleyball popular.
 
IVL has total Rs 22 lakh prize money at stake with winner getting Rs ten lakh purse, while second and third placed teams taking home Rs 7.5 lakh and five lakh respectively.

IVL inauguration and inaugural round would be held in Bangalore (May 29 to June 2), and it would move to Chennai (June 4 to 8), Yanam (June 12 to 16) and Hyderabad (June 20 to 24) where award ceremony was scheduled.
 
IVL Coordinator G E Sridharan said globally Volleyball Leagues were held in 21 countries and in Asia India was the third country after Japan and Malaysia.
 
''Though we are yet to get title sponsor, each team is making their own effort to get sponsors. Once beginning has been made I don't think there will be any difficulty to get support from corporate and other sectors,'' Murugan said.

Teams are - Chennai Spikers, Yanam Tigers, Hyderabad Chargers, Karnataka Bulls,Kerala Killers and Maratha Warriors.
